US military seeks microgrid for secure energy

The US military has enlisted the help of an industrial manufacturer to develop a microgrid to help its bases manage power and storage while reducing carbon emissions.

Eaton Corporation, through a $2.4 million federal stimulus grant, aims to help military bases ensure uninterrupted power supplies for critical mission and support functions.

Working with research teams at Georgia Tech University and the University of Wisconsin, Eaton plans to demonstrate how a microgrid system can operate independently of a civilian grid while balancing the use of solar, wind and natural gas backup power, and storing energy for future needs.
