UK supermarket chain inks smart-grid tech deal

UK grocery chain Sainsbury’s has signed an agreement with RLtec to fit dynamic demand technology to its stores’ heating and ventilation systems.

To be installed in more than 200 stores, the smart-grid technology that cut carbon emissions by two million tonnes a year, according to RLtec. The 10-year deal follows a successful trial of the technology at three Sainsbury’s stores in the southeast and is scheduled to go live today.

Dynamic demand works by managing the power consumption of equipment, responding automatically to second-by-second changes in the balance between supply and demand on the grid. As a result, the carbon dioxide-producing power stations that are currently held in reserve to perform this balancing service will not be needed as much and emissions can be reduced.
