UK govt: Let's 'mainstream' sustainable development

UK officials today announced a “Mainstreaming Sustainable Development” package aimed at guaranteeing that government policies have been “sustainability-proofed.”

The goal is to make sure policies help to deliver sustainable economic growth, improve quality of life and protect the natural environment now and for future generations.

“The government is determined that as we reduce the deficit, we also rebalance the economy and put it on a greener, more sustainable footing,” said Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg.

Officials say the package will put into practice the government’s commitment to be the “greenest government ever,” a pledge many sustainability advocates say the coalition government has so far failed to live up to. Among the package’s stated goals: cutting waste by 25 per cent (about 74,000 tonnes) by the end of this Parliament, implementing best-practice water efficiency methods, an increased commitment to greenhouse gas reduction and more sustainable and efficient purchasing practices.
