UK agency investigates benefits of energy meter data
ELEXON, which provides balancing and settlement services to the UK electricity industry, plans to investigate the potential benefits that could come from using more accurate, up-to-date data from smart meters in homes and small businesses.
In a just-launched consultation, ELEXON is seeking public input into how smart meters could help deliver:
- Energy bills that cover only actual usage;
- More innovative tariffs and price plans from energy companies;
- Better consumer understanding of energy use and ways to reduce consumption.
In an earlier report, ELEXON found that better data from smart meters for large commercial energy customers could yield a benefit of around £35 million ($57 million) over five years. In its latest consultation, ELEXON proposes extending this approach to 29 million meters in homes and small businesses, which account for around 90 percent of energy usage in the UK. It says doing so could mean even larger benefits for energy suppliers and consumers.
The deadline for public responses to the new consultation is September 12.
