Study targets solar's effect on distribution

How could energy from solar panels affect a utility’s distribution systems? Georgia Power and the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) have launched an 18-month study aimed at answering that question.

As part of the study, 50 photovoltaic systems will be installed in seven cities across Georgia, with sites chosen based on a variety of environmental parameters. By choosing a variety of locations, the study will allow for evaluation of diverse conditions such as temperature, cloud cover and solar intensity.

The research is designed to:

  • Identify the effects, if any, on operation of Georgia Power’s distribution system
  • Help understand the feasibility of widespread solar PV installations on distribution lines
  • Determine ranges for overall PV performance in Georgia
  • Characterise and compare variable issues such as passing clouds
