Smart grids part of EU drive for low-carbon economy

The European Commission has released new proposals to reinvigorate 2020 energy-saving efforts and create a genuine low-carbon economy by 2050.

The proposals, which include rolling out smart meters and grids, could potentially save every household €1,000 and create two million jobs in the process, according to the commission.

The commission’s strategy builds on the three headline targets already set for 2020: slashing greenhouse gas emissions by 20 per cent, drawing 20 per cent of energy from renewable sources and cutting energy use by 20 per cent.
