Siemens to upgrade Swedish rail power system

train-tracksSiemens Mobility will install six static frequency converters for traction power supply on the Swedish Rail Administration’s Banverket system.

The project is worth about €33 million, with work expected to be completed in the summer of 2011.

Siemens’ newly developed Sitras SFC converters, each of which has a 17-megawatt power output, are compact, environment-friendly and quiet. The devices convert the normal three-phase current 50 hertz into single-phase traction power, which at 16.7 hertz is only one-third the frequency of three-phase current.

One converter will be installed in Eskilstuna and five others in Häggvik in order to supply power to the Greater Stockholm area.
