Siemens: $1bn order for Saudi power, desalination

Siemens will supply more than $1 billion in equipment to Saudi Arabia for a combined cycle power plant with seawater desalination facility.

The order is one of the largest ever for Siemens Energy in the Middle East. It was placed by a consortium comprising Al Arrab Contracting Company, Saudi Arabia and the Chinese SepcoIII Electric Power Construction Corporation.

The Ras Az Zawr development will include a 2400-megawatt power plant and a desalination operation producing about 225 million imperial gallons of drinking water per day for the capital city Riyadh with its five million inhabitants. That comes to  around 200 liters per inhabitant.

The facility is scheduled to begin commercial operations in early 2014.
