Sensus enables flexible communications for gas meters

Utility management technology provider Sensus has released a new transceiver designed to enable more flexible two-way communications for natural gas meters.

The Sensus SmartPoint GM transceivers can be easily installed on existing residential, commercial or industrial meters, according to the company. The technology enables system-wide data collection and monitoring for improved customer service and operational efficiency.

When connected with Sensus’ FlexNet advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) communications network, the transceivers allow utilities to move away from walk-by and drive-by meter reading to a fixed-base system.

“These transceivers enable gas utilities to gather data that helps them better serve their customers by understanding usage patterns and improve operational efficiencies such as reducing truck rolls and optimising human resources,” said Joe McCormick, vice president of gas operations at Sensus. “In addition, the alarm features are pre-programmable and alert utilities to specified conditions that may require a particular action.”
