Sainsbury's signs wind farm electricity deal

Supermarket chain Sainsbury’s has signed a deal to take all the power from a 6MW wind farm near Glasgow.

The deal, reported by the Financial Times this weekend, is only small (it will provide Sainsbury’s with just one per cent of its electricity requirements) but significant because Sainsbury’s is the first company in the UK to sign a deal directly with the electricity generating company (not the supplier) – the deal has been structured so that the wind farm electricity will be fed into the national grid and the supply to the supermarket chain managed by Npower.

Sainsbury’s signed the deal with wind farm developer A7 Lockhead, which is backed by Climate Change Capital’s VC fund Ventus.
