Rollout of 30,000 smart meters one of Germany's largest yet

The utility company RheinEnergie plans to use Cuculus’ ZONOS platform to support its rollout of 30,000 smart meters, one of the largest-yet deployments in Germany.

RheinEnergie has worked with Cuculus since first adopting the ZONOS platform for a 3,000-meter smart-metering pilot in 2009. The pilot was aimed at finding the best ways to present smart-metering data for home users, with ZONOS being used to measure electricity, gas and water consumption.

Based on the results of its pilot tests, RheinEnergie now aims to deploy 30,000 smart meters to its customers. It plans to use the ZONOS platform in conjunction with SAP’s IS-U EHP5 Interface for Smart Metering (MDUS).

“The very positive experience from our earlier pilots gives us confidence that Cuculus will meet our expectations,” said RheinEnergie’s Wolfram Bennerscheidt. “Smart metering is complex and will lead us to explore new frontiers.”

RheinEnergie provides both energy and water to customers in Cologne and surrounding regions of Rhineland.
