Quebec gives OK for 80-MW wind project

The Quebec government has given the go-ahead for an 80-megawatt wind-energy project to be located in the municipality of Saint-Robert-Bellarmin.

The EDF Energy installation is expected to generated enough electricity to meet the power needs of more than 18,000 Quebec homes.

Construction on the nearly $200-million project is set to begin within the next few weeks, with commercial operations beginning as early as 2012, according to Stéphane Boyer, vice-president-Quebec for EDF EN Canada Inc.

Turbine manufacturer REpower will supply 40 wind turbines rated at 2 MW each with a significant amount of content manufactured locally. Turbine blades, towers and electrical converters are also expected to be provided by regionally-based factories.
