Qualcomm Atheros aims to enable 'internet of things'

A new offering from Qualcomm Atheros Inc. targets companies working to deploy machine-to-machine (M2M) communications in the smart-grid and building automation markets.

The AF4100 Wi-Fi system-in-package module is designed to enable long-range transmission while minimizing energy consumption. It’s Qualcomm Atheros’ latest addition to its “Internet of Everything” product portfolio.

Qualcomm Atheros is the networking and connectivity subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated.

Developed in collaboration with Freescale Semiconductor, the AF4100 module “marks a significant step forward in advancing our Internet of Everything vision,” said Adam Lapede, senior director of Internet of Things technology at Qualcomm Atheros. “Many potential customers have been frustrated by the lack of a standards-based, globally interoperable, low-cost modular solution for M2M applications, which is broadly available, energy efficient and can connect easily to a simple MCU running various applications.”

With its small size, low energy and low cost, the AR4100 “will help expand the universe of connected devices,” Lapede added.

“Freescale and Qualcomm Atheros share a common vision for increasing connectivity in the home and enterprise to share information, streamline operations and reduce expenses,” said John Weil, global product and enablement manager at Freescale. New M2M technologies like the AR4100 module, he added, will help companies “deliver connected devices that will enable the true Internet of Things.”
