60-megawatt waste-to-energy plant OK'd
The Government today approved plans for a new 60-megawatt biomass- and waste-to-energy plant to be built on an old industrial site at Tilbury Docks in Essex.
The plant will be built by Tilbury Green Power Ltd, which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Express Energy Holdings.
“If we are to tackle climate change we must reduce the amount of waste going to landfill and also make use of renewable sources of fuel,” said Energy and Climate Change Minister Lord Hunt. “This power station will achieve both those objectives by turning waste into energy and using biomass, which will also contribute to delivering the UK’s renewable energy targets.”
He added, “In addition, the three-year construction of the plant will require up to 380 jobs at its peak and up to 120 jobs once it is operational.”
The £250 million plant will generate energy from two fuel sources: sustainably generated wood chips and a solid recovered fuel made from household waste that would otherwise be sent to landfill. The 60 megawatts of carbon-neutral energy it will generate will be enough to power about 100,000 homes.
