New solar shelter could provide power in emergencies
A new type of solar-powered shelter could not only provide cover and lighting at bus stops, taxi stops and walkways, but could act as a source of emergency power for charging mobile phones and other electronic devices.
The Eco-Shell, developed by Kyocera Corporation, its solar energy subsidiary Kyocera Solar Corporation and Sekisui Jushi Corporation, is a multi-purpose solar-powered shelter with energy-efficient LEDs (light-emitting diodes) for lighting. Available exclusively in Japan starting July 20, the Eco-Shell will be marketed to both municipalities and private companies.
The new style of shelter is being released at a time when energy efficiency measures have taken on a new urgency in Japan following the devastating March 11 earthquake, tsunami and resulting nuclear power plant failures.
Electricity generated from the shelter’s solar power generating system can be used for surrounding electrical needs, such as lighting for advertising displays, with excess power being sold to the power utility companies to helpmeet expected power shortages in Japan during the summer. In a disaster, the shelters can also provide a source of emergency power as they feature an independent power outlet for charging electronics.
