Itron, Tantalus team up to expand smart-grid offerings for utilities

Metering firm Itron and smart-grid networking provider Tantalus are partnering to expand the range of smart-grid technologies and services they can offer to electric companies and multi-service public utilities.

Together, the two companies aim to target public utilities across North and Central America looking to provide smart metering, energy management and other resource efficiency programs to their customers.

The partnership will combine Itron’s Sentinel and CENTRON electricity meters and its gas and water ERT modules with Tantalus’ TUNet communications network. The combination will enable cooperatives and public utilities to offer programs like smart metering, demand response and distribution automation to a service area that includes nearly 40 million electricity meters.

With the further integration of Itron’s gas and water modules into Tantalus’ communications platform, utilities will also be able to deliver more smart-grid services to properties served by up to 20 million gas and water meters.

“Our combined solution delivers on the promise that all utility companies should be able to leverage their current installed base of equipment to deliver the benefits of smart grid to all customers,” said Philip Mezey, president of Itron and COO for the company’s energy solutions.

“Together, we will leverage existing and future electric, gas and water metering endpoints to help public utilities make their grids smarter,” added Eric Murray, president and CEO of Tantalus.
