Interest in IBM grid spikes after Jeopardy! win

One day after IBM’s Watson computer system beat two human champions on Jeopardy!, the number of volunteers registering on IBM’s World Community Grid jumped by 700 per cent.

The World Community Grid is a virtual supercomputer that helps scientists solve humanitarian challenges by tapping the unused computing power of personal computers around the world. Among the projects it is tackling are new treatments for HIV/AIDS, cancer research, and affordable water purification.
