IBM, OMRON team up for 'smart' shipping

trucksOMRON Corporation, a Japan-based maker of sensor and control equipment, is working with IBM to provide “smart” technologies that reduce energy consumption, cut carbon emissions and increase efficiency in transportation operations.

The technologies will help customers decide on the best types of shipping and transportation options and optimise routes for maximum reduction of costs and carbon dioxide emissions. The goal is to help businesses prepare for anticipated regulatory restrictions and penalties for carbon dioxide emissions.

IBM and OMRON initially plan to roll out the new technologies for Japanese customers in the manufacturing and transportation industries. The systems could later be expanded to serve clients in other countries and business sectors.
