Faster than a standard bus service and cheaper (and faster) to implement than light rail, bus rapid transit (BRT) typically uses dedicated traffic lanes to transport commuters from stop to stop in busy cities. A growing number of cities around the world are adding BRT systems in an effort to reduce traffic congestion and improve sustainability.

Johannesburg’s new bus rapid transit (BRT) system, called Rea Vaya (for “we are moving”), began operating in 2009. The South African city expects the buses, made by Scania, will help to significantly reduce its carbon emissions.
