Elster to deploy more smart meters in Kazakhstan

Elster will be helping a regional distribution grid company in Kazakhstan deploy advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) for high- and medium-voltage substations.

The company will be working with Karagandy Zharyk, which supplies electricity to more than 1.5 million customers in central Kazakhstan. Elster Metronica, an Elster Group company, completed an initial AMI deployment for Karagandy Zharyk in 2006 that covered 42 substations in the region.

Based on the results of that first deployment,Karagandy Zharyk chose Elster for an expanded AMI program as part of its efforts to meet government energy efficiency requirements, said Nurzhan Imanov, the distribution company’s general manager. The second-stage AMI deployment will cover an additional 45 substations and is expected to be completed by the end of 2011.
