Does our energy future lie off-grid?

Syracuse University Research Fellow Janet Marsden plans to discuss her vision of a future in which homes can produce all the energy they need off-grid when she speaks at the third-annual IEEE Green Technologies Conference.

The conference is set for 14-15 April at the Hilton Hotel in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

“We have created a grid which is so complex that it is unmanageable,” Marsden said on a radio program earlier this month. “So because we have wireless architecture at this point, what we want to look at is a different way to approach the energy delivery problem.”

Marsden foresees the day homes and businesses have their own solar, wind and geothermal power-producing technology, as well as batteries to store excess energy. She believes the electric-vehicle battery technology being developed by automobile manufacturers will evolve into applications for buildings.
