Demand response programs growing fast in US

Advanced metering has reached 8.7 per cent of the US market, up from 4.7 per cent in 2008, according to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission’s 2010 Demand Response and Advanced Metering Survey.

Those figures are even higher in the upper Midwest, West and Texas, where more than 13 per cent of the market now has advanced meters.

The survey also finds that more than 500 entities in the US offer demand response programs, with a potential total impact of more than 58,000 megawatts, or 7.6 per cent of US peak demand, compared to just 17,000 megawatts in 2008. The regions with the largest estimated demand response resources are the Midwest-to-Mid-Atlantic region, the Upper Midwest and the Southeast.
