Danish utility aims to fast-track smart-grid improvements

NRGi, one of the largest consumer-owned energy companies in Denmark, has enlisted the help of eMeter and Eltel to improve its approach toward energy management.

The company plans to use eMeter’s Energy IP meter data management platform to improve and scale its smart-grid deployment to more than 210,000 meters. The platform will replace an existing meter data management (MDM) system.

The switch is aimed at adding new functions and customer information integration for billing and synchronization with Eltel’s smart metering system. It’s also designed to help NRGi meet its rapid smart-meter deployment goals, improve control and monitoring of low-voltage networks and enable end-to-end smart grid tariffs for distributed energy production.

Other applications that could be added in the future include demand response, load quality, phase balance and network aggregation.

“Denmark is one of the fastest growing markets in Europe for smart metering systems and NRGi is committed to being at the forefront of that growth,” said Carlo Lazar, division director for smart metering at Eltel Networks.

eMeter, a leader in Smart Grid management software, today announced that NRGi, one of the largest consumer-owned energy companies in Denmark, has selected eMeter EnergyIP® meter data managementplatform to improve and scale NRGi’s Smart Grid deployment to over 210,000 meters. In partnership with Eltel, a leading European Infranet provider, eMeter will serve as part of NRGi’s bold and forward-thinking framework for energy management in Europe.“We chose eMeter for their platform’s flexibility, scalability and proven success with their utility customers,” said NRGi Project manager Poul Berthelsen. “We believe the strength of eMeter’s platform and its history of successful deployments makes them one of the very few meter data management companies who can fully take advantage of existing rich partner channels and enable NRGi to deliver our data-driven Smart Grid vision.”

The eMeter EnergyIP platform will replace an existing MDM system, further developing NRGi’s advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) integration, enabling functionality and integrating customer information for billing and synchronization within Eltel’s smart metering systems. NRGi’s platform shift to eMeter EnergyIP will allow rapid time-to-market for their aggressive smart meter deployment goals this year, including control and monitoring of low-voltage networks for improved customer service and enabling end-to-end smart grid tariffs for distributed energy production. Additional applications that could be implemented on the platform include demand response, load quality, phase balance, and network aggregation.

“Denmark is one of the fastest growing markets in Europe for smart metering systems and NRGi is committed to being at the forefront of that growth. Eltel and eMeter are delivering the tools for NRGi to deliver not only increased efficiency but also information-driven services for its customers,” said Carlo Lazar, Division Director Smart Metering at Eltel Networks. “We look forward to many more implementations with eMeter as we see continued smart metering momentum in Europe.”
