- Researchers from Kingston University in London are spearheading a drive to help older householders reduce their carbon footprint and cut their energy bills at the same time;
- The European Science Foundation has scheduled a conference on “Global Change Challenges: Transforming Energy Systems” from 3 to 7 October in Sweden;
- A research project that aims to produce hydrogen on an environmentally friendly and cost-effective basis by using energy from the sun has won an E.ON research award;
- Environmental organisations have succeeded in influencing the EU to set long-term climate goals. However, in practical politics, the industry is the winner of the climate battle so far, according to a recent PhD thesis;
- Two projects — Albert Basin, East London, and Elephant & Castle, London Borough of Southwark — were announced as two of 16 founding projects of the Climate Positive Development Programme, a Clinton Climate Initiative (CCI) programme that will support the development of large-scale urban projects that demonstrate cities can grow in ways that are “climate positive”;
- Friends of the Earth, an environmental group, has expressed concern over the government’s car scrappage programme, which came into effect this week;
- Around 3,000 people in the capital could have died in 2005 due to air pollution, a report from the London Assembly has suggested;
- A £12.5 million upgrade is to turn the capital’s iconic London Eye into a more environmentally friendly attraction.
