China-Australia’s green tech deal inked

CHINA WATCH Australia and China yesterday signed a partnership agreement that will pave the way for the installation of low-emission coal energy technology in Beijing next year.

Signed by China Huaneng Group, a China’s state-owned energy enterprise, and Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), Australia’s national science agency, the agreement aims to develop clean coal power generation, and carbon capturing and storage technologies, according to CSIRO’s press release.

The cooperation includes capturing power plants’ flue gases, coal gasification, coal gas purification and some other power generation technologies–and a post-combustion capture pilot project at Huaneng Beijing thermal power plant.

Post combustion capture (PCC) is a process that captures carbon dioxide (CO2) from power station flue gases and is a key technology that can potentially reduce carbon dioxide emissions from existing and future coal-fired power stations by more than 85 per cent.
