Boston Power gets $45m from VCs

Along with the rise of the gadget society goes the annoyance of craptastic battery life and the landfill-bothering that goes along with the replacement cycle. Boston Power has created lithium ion batteries that have a lifecycle three times longer than most and have managed to catch the eye of VCs as a sustainable battery alternative, no less.

Boston Power has this week picked up a tasty $45 million from those self same VCs, in fact, including the likes of Oak Investment Partners and included existing investors Venrock Associates, Granite Global Ventures and Gabriel Venture Partners.

Says Boston Power:

Boston-Power will use the new capital to scale business development, marketing, research and development, and manufacturing operations to meet strong global demand for Sonata – the company’s next-generation Lithium-ion battery technology. Sonata initially targets notebook computers. Eventually, the company’s products could be used to power an extensive range of end-applications – from consumer electronics devices to hybrid electric vehicles.
