Boeing, Siemens to help US military build microgrids

Boeing and Siemens are joining forces to develop and market smart-grid technologies for the US Department of Defense (DOD).

The collaboration is aimed at improving energy access and security for the DOD, which is the largest energy consumer in the federal government. The companies will focus their efforts on providing US military installations with secure microgrid management solutions that lower operational costs and increase energy efficiency.

“This collaboration will make a real difference in how the DOD uses energy,” said Tim Noonan, vice president of Boeing Energy.

The alliance draws on Boeing’s expertise in providing the DOD with complex systems and technologies, and Siemens’ global energy management capabilities.

“(W)e’re committed to helping the DOD achieve unprecedented levels of power reliability, quality, efficiency and energy independence,” said Judy Marks, head of Siemens US Federal Business.

Working together, Siemens and Boeing are looking to design a microgrid management solution that:

  • Implement economical energy-efficiency tools for analyzing, controlling and automating energy processes;
  • Use smart energy controls to provide real-time data for managing energy use; and
  • Integrate renewable energy sources and storage.
