ARPA-E showcases advanced batteries, biofuel innovations
The US Department of Energy’s 2011 ARPA-E Energy Innovation Summit Technology Showcase is now under way in Washington, DC.
Among the companies and technologies being highlighted are:
- Berkeley, California-based PolyPlus Battery Company, which is developing a lithium-air battery it says could enable an electric car to travel 500 miles on a single charge.
- Agrivida, which is working on “integrated enzyme-feedstock systems” that it claims could transform the biomass conversion process.
- OpX Biotechnologies, which is exploring the use of hydrogen gas to convert carbon dioxide into biodiesel for less than $2.50 per gallon.
- North Carolina-based Cree, which is working on advanced silicon carbide power transistors that could dramatically improve efficiencies for power substations and other power grid applications.
