120,000 new solar modules go up in Bavaria

Construction has started on what will be one of the largest solar energy parks in Bavaria, Germany.

Set for completion by the end of 2011, the installation of 120,000 solar modules will produce about 28 megawatts of green energy, enough to supply power to up to 32,000 people. The project is being built by Solar-Konzept using photovoltaic modules from REC.

Solar-Konzept and REC have worked together on several other solar-energy projects.

“This is the largest solar project using REC modules to date,” said John Andersen Jr., REC Group COO and executive vice president for wafers, cells & modules.

The €50 million ($72 million) project was developed thanks to the combined efforts of several local partners. The grounds for the solar park, formerly a NATO airport, are leased for a period of 20 years by the Federal Office for Real Estate.
